Course Description

Looking to start a career in healthcare? The HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (Acute Care) is available with government funding assistance for eligible Western Australian residents. This nationally recognised qualification equips you with the practical skills and knowledge to assist nurses and health professionals in the care of patients across acute healthcare settings. Training combines online theory with hands-on practical sessions, covering the clinical, technical, and procedural skills needed to work confidently as a Health Services Assistant in WA’s growing healthcare sector.

Entry Requirements

There are no pre-entry study or qualification requirements, but to be eligible, you must:

  • An Australian citizen; or
  • A permanent visa holder; or
  • Hold a sub-class 300, 309, 444, 445, 461, 785, 790, or 820 visa; or
  • Be secondary holder of a temporary visa of sub-class 188, 457, 482, 489, 491 or 494 visa; or
  • Hold a Bridging Visa E (subclasses 050 and 051) where a valid application for visa of subclass 785 or 790 was made; or
  • Be a Ukraine citizen who holds a visa sub-class 449 or 786; or
  • Be an Afghan citizen who holds a visa sub-class 449; or
  • Hold a bridging visa with eligibility to work where a valid application for a visa subclass 866 was made.
  • Reside in Western Australia;
  • Possess suitable English language, literacy and numeracy skills (e.g. you will need to be able to read, understand and communicate care requirements on a care plan);
  • Have a current COVID-19 vaccination (unless exempt); and
  • Provide a copy of your passport or photo identification.
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI). We recommend that you create your USI before you book your course.

To enrol, you’ll need to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment, available either in person or online via Moodle. Your results help us identify whether any additional learning support is needed to ensure you can meet the required Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) levels throughout your training.

Prior to undertaking practical placement, you will be required to provide:

  • Current Police Clearance (no older than six months) or NDIS Worker Screening Check; and
  • A current flu vaccination (unless exempt).

Possible job opportunities

Auscare graduates go on to work across a range of hospital and acute care settings, with direct employment pathways available through Auscare Staffing Solutions. Roles include orderly, nursing assistant, nursing support worker, operating theatre technician, patient service assistant (PSA), ward assistant, patient support assistant, wardsperson, patient care assistant, and ward support.


Course overview

This qualification equips you to assist in the delivery of nursing care within acute healthcare settings. Training combines theory with hands-on practical sessions using current industry equipment and documentation, supported by highly experienced Registered Nurse trainers and assessors who will guide you throughout. Graduates leave ready to step confidently into an Assistant in Nursing role, with the skills to work effectively alongside professional health staff under supervision.

You’ll develop practical knowledge across a range of clinical and workplace tasks including transporting patients, preparing and maintaining beds, basic food safety practice, infection control and prevention, recognising healthy body systems, basic medical terminology, and workplace health and safety.

Units of Competency

You will need to complete the following 15 units to successfully achieve the qualification. The units fall under three categories – Core, Compulsory and Elective. The elective units have been selected to meet the requirements of the work placements.
